D34 is a 21 bed ward catering predominantly for patients attending hospital for Orthopaedic treatment, including spinal surgery, along with some surgical ENT cases. The adjacent ward, D35, has 16 beds including 4 side rooms and is a general surgical ward. Children and young people may be on these wards from one day to a number of weeks dependent on their medical needs and length of rehabilitation. We help to organise Home Education for those requiring it on discharge.
We are based in the playroom on D34. Pupils are able to access work at their bedside or, if well enough, can go to the Studio classroom at our main school (where subjects such as food technology, music and a range of art activities may be available). D34 has wi-fi connection allowing pupils to access the internet at their bedsides to help their studies – laptops are available to support learning during our school day.
We aim to provide a curriculum suited to the pupil’s age, abilities and medical condition, covering a variety of subjects and often are able to tailor this to particular needs and interests to make time on the wards as enjoyable and productive as possible. To help us with this we also work closely with the Play Leaders on the wards and consult with medical staff/Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapist where appropriate.
Pupils who are on the wards as long-term or recurrent patients are prioritised and contact is made with mainstream schools. Liaison with schools allows us to set up a programme of work ensuring as much continuity as possible for these pupils.
